The Quinta Azul with its 4 Casas (Lorenzo, Luisa, Julia and Amelie) is beautifully situated in the nature reserve of Vale do Seixe at the Vicentina Coast, in Southwestern Portugal. The Seixe River forms a natural border between Alentejo and Algarve and flows into the Atlantic near by the beach of Odeceixe, about 1.5 km from the Quinta Azul.
The Quinta is the Portuguese equivalent of the Spanish Finca, a rural property consisting of a few houses and sheds. In many cases, the Quinta was possessed by a feudal lord and leased to small farmers. Their families, that ran the farm independently, had to pay a part of their produce to the owner.
The houses of the present days have been reconstructed from 1997 to 2000 with the use of ecological construction material (cork, chestnut, loam and clay),
preserving its traditional style. Because of the site’s topography, they were built in 3 different terraces. The houses are enclosed by 1 hectare land, plant with fruit and olive trees, shrubs and
flowers, and passed through by paved and gravel ways. There is also a system of natural lakes extended over 3 levels - an invitation to a chlorine-free bath. For the children, a playground has been installed
close to the lakes with climbing frames made of wood, swings, seesaws and also a little “cable railway”. The Quinta Azul is supplied with electricity by a hydroelectric power plant close to the
Santa Clara Reservoir, located at a distance of 40 km in direction of Ourique. A system of solar collectors warms up and an UV filter sterilises the drinking water that is provided by a deep well.
The houses were named after our 3 children. – The mixture of the traditional Portuguese and the German rational style results in a harmonic coexistence of
efficiency and ambience.
Our local office is located in the neighbourhood. Our housekeeper Mrs. Rodrigues speaks German and some words in English, lives in Odeceixe and knows well
country and people of Portugal. She keeps the keys and is your person to turn to whatever your question or problem is.
